Free HRA exemption calculator for India

This free HRA calculator works out how much of your house rent allowance is exempt from income tax under Section 10(13A) of the old regime. The exemption is the least of three figures: the actual HRA you receive, the rent you pay minus 10% of your salary, and 50% of basic plus DA in a metro (40% in a non-metro). Enter monthly figures and it annualizes them, shows the exempt and taxable HRA, and tells you which of the three rules is binding. No sign-up.

Worked example

On a basic of Rs 50,000 a month in a metro, with Rs 20,000 HRA and Rs 18,000 rent: the three figures are actual HRA Rs 2,40,000, rent over 10% of salary Rs 1,56,000, and 50% of basic Rs 3,00,000 a year. The least is Rs 1,56,000, so that much HRA is tax-free and Rs 84,000 is taxable.

Why use Hisaab's HRA calculator

It applies all three legal tests, handles metro and non-metro, and names the binding rule, so you know exactly how to raise your exemption (usually by paying more rent or restructuring basic pay). HRA is an old-regime benefit, so compare both regimes in the income tax calculator before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

How is HRA exemption calculated?

The exempt HRA is the least of three amounts: the actual HRA received, the rent paid minus 10% of (basic + DA), and 50% of (basic + DA) for metro cities or 40% for non-metro. Whatever is smallest is tax-free; the rest of your HRA is taxable.

Which cities count as metro for HRA?

For HRA, the metro cities are Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, where the limit is 50% of basic plus DA. Everywhere else is non-metro at 40%.

Can I claim HRA under the new tax regime?

No. The HRA exemption is available only under the old tax regime. If you choose the new regime you cannot claim it, which is why it is worth comparing both regimes in the income tax calculator.

What if I do not receive HRA but pay rent?

Then you cannot use this exemption, but you may be able to claim a deduction under Section 80GG instead. This calculator covers the standard HRA exemption for salaried people who receive HRA.

Is this HRA calculator free?

Yes. It is completely free with no sign-up or ads, and applies all three exemption rules automatically.
